Professor Tan Xiaobo from Michigan State University Delivers an Academic Report at NJUPT

On the morning of April 20, at the invitation of NJUPT, professor Tan Xiaobo, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering of Michigan State University, participated in the “Series of Academic Events in 76thanniversary of NJUPT”, and delivered a speech entitled “Model Reduction for Hysteresis Operators”in the building of the School of Automation in Xianlin Campus of NJUPT.

Prof. Tan Xiaobo delivered the latest research progress of the Intelligent Micro System Laboratory at Michigan State University in software robots, flexible array sensors and biomimetic robotic fishes. He elaborated on a method for the optimization and order reduction of hysteresis operator, which prevents large amounts of calculation of the classical nonlinear hysteresis model. After the lecture, Prof. Tan had a forum with teachers of the School of Automation. In the afternoon, he discussed about design and analysis of software robots and study on structural stability together with teachers and students from the Jiangsu IOT Intelligent Robot engineering Laboratory in aseminar.


Speaker’s Profile:

Professor Tan Xiaobo, an ELLE fellow (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), is a professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and also the Director of the Intelligent Micro System Laboratory at Michigan State University. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in automation from Tsinghua University in 1995 and 1998 respectively, his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland in 2002 , and did postdoctoral research at the System Research Institute of University of Maryland from 2002 to 2004. He is mainly engaged in the research of intelligent underwater robots, software robots, and smart materials. Prof. Tan has published over 200 academic papers in international magazines and conferences such as IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Automatic, IEEE Transactions on Robotics, and IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics. He is a member of the editorial board of AUTOMATICA, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics. He holds 3 U.S. patents and has chaired several National Science Foundations. He was granted the Distinguished Junior Faculty Award from the National Science Foundation in 2006, the Michigan State University’s Distinguished Scholar Award in 2018, and Distinguished Alumni Award of the University of Maryland in 2018.
